Profile

Yotasuke Takahashi ( (たか) (はし) () () (すけ) Takahashi Yotasuke?) is a former member of the cram school that Yatora Yaguchi attended and a student at Geidai, Tokyo University of the Arts.

Appearance[]

Yotasuke is a young man of small stature with short black hair that is parted down the center with long bangs swept to each side of his face. He has pale skin and dark greenish-blue eyes. He also has a beauty mark underneath each eye as well as thin, black eyebrows.

Yotasuke often wears a yellow plaid long-sleeve shirt with jeans and a pair of sneakers. When painting, he prefers to wear a standard cooking apron.

Personality[]

Yotasuke has a reserved and shy personality, although he is also shown to be standoffish and easy to anger. He is blunt and often says things as they are in his mind, without attempting to explain to others what he means. He has complete confidence in his art skills and is not afraid to admit that he excels at what he does.

Background[]

Yotasuke claims that he has no friends. It is uncertain whether he has any immediate family other than his mother, though in Chapter 12 he says that his "parents" are contacts in his phone, implying that he has a father who has not been shown.

Plot[]

Prep School Arc[]

Yotasuke is first introduced as a member of the same cram school that Yatora Yaguchi enrolls in. While it is initially assumed that he is new to art, he shocks Yatora with his skills in dessin.

Eventually, Yotasuke grows frustrated with the cram school, stating that he does not want to keep making “exam art”. Though he and Yatora do not keep in contact after he leaves the cram school, Yotasuke continues to influence Yatora's artwork, and the two occasionally run into each other.

Geidai Exam Arc[]

They hang out a few times before the Geidai entrance exam, once during the New Year and at Geidai's cultural festival, where they view the accepted artwork at Geidai together. They meet again at the Geidai entrance exam for a brief moment before parting ways. Later, Hashida tells Yatora that Yotasuke also passed the first exam.

During the second exam, Yatora and Yotasuke are both in the same room for painting. Yotasuke is shocked to see Yaguchi's painting and tells him about it during the break—the first time he has said anything positive to Yatora about his art. They continue eating and don't meet again until the final exam and acceptance announcement.

Both Yotasuke and Yatora get accepted into the Oil Painting Department at Geidai.

Relationships[]

Haruka Hashida[]

Hashida is in the same year as Yotasuke at the high school that they both attend. Yotasuke also attends the same cram school as Hashida and Yatora. After he leaves the cram school, Yotasuke seems to still be in contact with Hashida and remain close acquaintances, despite Yotasuke expressing his displeasure with Hashida.

Yatora Yaguchi[]

Yotasuke first meets Yatora at the cram school that they both attend. Upon their first encounter, Yotasuke brushes him off coldly, leaving him stunned and disappointed. After the drawing period, Yatora is left speechless by Yotasuke's skill in dessin and immediately begins to admire him, considering Yotasuke a genius. As they continue to encounter one another, Yotasuke is shown to harbor some resentment toward Yatora, claiming that Yatora already "has everything" (likely referring to his friends, good grades, and supportive family) and that he does not "need" to choose art. In Chapter 12, they attend a Hatsumōde together and end up on slightly friendlier terms afterward. Yatora is encouraged by the fact that despite Yotasuke's resentment, he has paid enough attention to him and his art, to the point where he gets annoyed whenever he looks at him. Yatora is shown to become very happy when Yotasuke acknowledges him or is mad at him, which Yotasuke finds to be weird. Currently, they are both second years at Geidai, and have been shown to eat lunch together and sit on the bus together during field trips. In Chapter 28, Yotasuke is shown to have been concerned for Yatora after he became upset due to a professor's comments.

Etymology[]

  • The name Yotasuke means "world" (世) (yo), "field, rice paddy" (田) (ta) and "forerunner, herald" (介) (suke).
    • Yotasuke's nickname, Sekai-kun (セカイくん Sekai-kun?), originally penned by Haruka Hashida, can mean "world" ( () (かい) sekai?) when written in kanji. It is a play on his given name, as the "yo" ( () ?) in Yotasuke is written the same as the "se" ( () ?) in "sekai", and both the "ta" ( () ?) and "suke" ( (すけ) ?) make up the kanji for "kai" ( (かい) ?).
  • Yotasuke's surname Takahashi means "tall, high" (高) (taka) and "bridge" (橋) (hashi).

Trivia[]

  • Yotasuke closely resembles Maru Mori, Yatora Yaguchi's upperclassman in high school, to the point where Yatora mistakes Yotasuke for Mori when he was feverish.
  • Yotasuke owns a cat as his 2020 birthday artwork depicts him playing video games with a white cat pawing at his face. At the end of Chapter 39, it is revealed that the Takahashi household owns a cat named Fumi.
